The idea to develop the universal spectacles was initiated at the VU university medical centre in Amsterdam and has been implemented by a team composed of optics and mechanics specialists.
The aim of the project is to help underprivileged children with poor vision in developing countries to have cheap spectacles with adjustable refractive power. This will assist them to be better equipped for a good education.

As of October 2005, the VU University Medical Center has joined forces with the d.o.b. foundation in order to start up the mass production of the universal spectacles.
